The Benefits Of Using Hyaluronic Acid In Your Skincare Routine

Hyaluronic acid is one of those skincare ingredients that most skincare fans have, at the very least, heard of. A hydrating hero, it’s revered for holding up to 1,000 times its own weight in water.

But the benefits of hyaluronic acid don’t stop there. In fact, there are many reasons why it’s a great ingredient to incorporate into your skincare regimen, if you aren’t using it already. Here are some of the benefits your skin can gain by using hyaluronic acid in your routine, according to a skin expert – plus some of our favourite HA products you can shop at Skin Pharmacy. But first…

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a type of sugar that occurs naturally in humans, and something that is produced by our bodies for various functions. Primarily known for its moisturising abilities, it’s also widely used in skincare products and aesthetic medicine to further gain benefits – which, when used as part of your skincare routine, are as follows.

The benefits of hyaluronic acid?

Improving skin barrier function

The skin barrier is integral to healthily-functioning skin, something that hyaluronic acid can support. “It helps strengthen and hydrate the skin barrier, protecting against environmental factors that can cause damage,” says GP and cosmetic doctor Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, AKA The Aesthetics Doctor

Soothing the skin

Though most of the benefits of hyaluronic acid are associated with hydration, it can also calm the skin. “It's also calming and soothing because of its anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it great for sensitive skin.

Elasticity and bounce

“In addition, Hyaluronic acid helps improve elasticity by increasing moisture levels, supporting skin bounce and resilience,” says Dr El Muntasar. Expect your skin to feel bouncier and more firm with continued HA use.

Plumpness

Hydrating and moisturising the skin also helps it look plumper, Dr El Muntasar confirms: “It's also deeply hydrating, as it can hold up to a thousand times its weight in water, keeping the skin plump and moisturised.” This can also give it a slightly dewier look.

Smoothing fine lines

Fine lines are more visible when the skin is dehydrated, so hyaluronic acid can have a smoothing effect, as well as hydrating the skin. “It also improves texture, and consistent use can help refine it, making the skin appear smoother and brighter,” says Dr El Muntasar.
