Frequently Asked Questions

How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin type, sensitivity and the exfoliant you use. For most people, 1-3 times a week is a good starting point. Sensitive or dry skin may benefit from less frequent exfoliation, while oilier or more congested skin may tolerate it more often. Avoid over-exfoliating, as this can cause dryness, irritation and a compromised skin barrier.

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the skin's surface, helping to improve texture, brightness and overall smoothness. Regular exfoliation can also help unclog pores, support more even skin tone and allow other skincare products to absorb more effectively. The right exfoliant can be particularly beneficial for concerns such as congestion, dullness, pigmentation and uneven texture.

Exfoliation should generally take place after cleansing. Start with a gentle cleanser to remove makeup, SPF, oil and impurities, then apply your exfoliant according to the product instructions. Follow with hydrating and barrier-supporting skincare. If you're using a leave-on exfoliant, there is usually no need to rinse it off unless directed otherwise.

AHA and BHA are both chemical exfoliants, but they work differently. AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) work primarily on the skin's surface and are often suited to concerns such as dullness, uneven texture and pigmentation. BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) are oil-soluble and can penetrate into pores, making them particularly useful for oily, congested or blemish-prone skin. The right choice depends on your skin type and concerns. If you're unsure which exfoliant is right for you, contact the Skin Pharmacy Concierge team for expert skincare advice.
