If retinol is part of your routine, you may have heard that ZO Skin Health's retinol formulas are changing. Three new 0.3% retinols have just launched, and in the UK they are available exclusively at Skin Pharmacy.

A lower number on the label can understandably raise questions. Is it as effective? Do you need to change your routine? Which formula replaces the one you already use? This guide answers each of those, so you can move across with confidence.

Why Have ZO Skin Health's Retinols Changed?

New EU guidance now limits how much retinol a skincare product can contain, and the UK is following suit. In response, ZO Skin Health has reformulated each of its retinols at 0.3%.

Rather than simply lowering the strength, ZO Skin Health took the opportunity to rethink how retinol reaches your skin. The result is a new delivery system designed to make every drop of retinol work even harder.

What Is ZO-RDS™ and Why Does It Matter?

Retinol is a powerful form of vitamin A that encourages skin renewal, helping to smooth texture, refine the look of fine lines and even skin tone. It is also delicate: exposed to light and air, it can break down before it ever reaches your skin.

ZO-RDS™ (Retinol Delivery System) protects the retinol inside tiny spheres called liposomes. These keep it stable in the formula, then release it gradually where your skin needs it.

Here is what that means for you:

  • More of the retinol arrives intact: strength is not only about the percentage on the label, but about how much retinol actually reaches your skin.

  • A gentler experience: a more gradual release means many people notice less of the redness, dryness or flaking retinol can bring.

  • The same philosophy: real retinol, working to renew your skin, with a more considered route to results.

Is 0.3% Retinol Still Effective?

Yes. It is natural to compare percentages, but the percentage alone does not tell the full story. A formula that protects its retinol and delivers it efficiently can achieve results that a higher, less stable concentration may not.

It is also worth knowing that not every dose has gone down. Retinol Skin Brightener and Clear Renewal both move from 0.25% to 0.3% retinol, so these formulas now contain a little more than before.

Which ZO Skin Health Retinol Replaces Yours?

Each of ZO Skin Health's retinols has a new version. If you already use one, here is where you will find it now:

The supporting ingredients you know in each formula remain, so the experience should feel familiar. If you would like a second opinion before switching, our experts are happy to help.

What to Expect When You Switch

As you start using the new formulas, your skin may feel calmer, with less of the redness, dryness or flaking you might be used to. That is completely expected, and it is not a sign that the retinol is doing any less. Your skin is still renewing; the journey there is simply a little kinder.

A few things that help:

  • Follow the directions on pack and introduce your new retinol gradually if you are new to retinol or have sensitive skin.

  • Avoid layering several strong actives at the same time, such as other retinoids or exfoliating acids, unless you have been advised to.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen while using retinol.

  • Give it time. Skin renewal is gradual, so consistency matters more than intensity.
